"I got involved in research to broaden my horizons and gain a deeper understanding in astronomy. I thought it would be both fun and educational to be able to make real life contributions to the astronomy department that will help further their research and give me a foot in the door into research in the future. As I plan to go to graduate school, I know having my name as author or co-author of a research paper can only help and the only way I could achieve this was through research. Along with the satisfaction of knowing I am making a contribution to the University's Astronomical Research I am also gaining knowledge on many subjects I would not otherwise know."

Research Description

Properties of Optical Fibers
Optical Fibers are used not only in astronomy but many parts of every day life including telecommunications and medical operations. I will be doing research to test different types of optical fibers of varying sizes, lengths, and shape to see how they react and are effected by movement, bending, and coupling. This will help increase the accuracy of our exoplanet research and gamma ray burst research, both of which rely on optical fibers. Any findings I make can be applied to these two research projects being done here at UF, but also to any research projects being done around the world both in astronomy and in other industries that use optical fibers.
