Research Description

Statistical and Machine Learning Analysis of Facebook's Social Network
At the Center for Applied Optimization (CAO), we are conducting statistical and machine learning analysis of Facebook's network of "Likes". By looking at a large number of users and the things that they like on Facebook (i.e. websites, companies, sports teams, etc.) as well as the users' biographical information (e.g. gender, date of birth, marital status etc.), we can develop a model that can a) predict certain biographical characteristics based on the things that a user likes and/or b) predict what a user will like based on their given biographical information. This projects combines elements of programming, statistics, massive data sets, data structures, and machine learning.
