Research Description

Discovery and Biosynthetic Pathway Elucidation of Microbial Natural Products
It is critical that new drugs are being developed to effectively fight diseases due to the effects of antibiotic resistance. Natural products are preeminent and prolific sources of new drug candidates. For example, the well-known β-lactam antibiotic, penicillin, is a fungal natural product. Through this project, I will explore a bacterial strain isolated from a marine fish for the discovery and development of novel antibiotics. Specifically, I will identify and isolate a set of biosynthetic genes (gene cluster) whose encoded products together may synthesize a novel natural product with unprecedented chemical structure.
