"I applied to the Scholars Program because I saw it as an opportunity to learn about the research field. There is so much research going on around us, especially as a student at a research-based institution. I wanted the challenge of taking on my own project, and getting some results in a field of interest. I hope to learn some of the many techniques used in laboratories today that help discover science."
I plan to graduate from UF and attend dental school here as well within the next 2 upcoming years. I enjoy doing research involved with molecular biology.

Mechanism of Inhibition of Tartrate Resistant Acid Phosphatase Activity by Enoxacin
Osteoclasts are the cells within our body responsible for bone resorption. In this study, I will examine the mechanism by which enoxacin, an inhibitor of osteoclasts, blocks the expression of tartrate-resistant acid phosphate (TRAP) activity. Based on previous data, I hypothesize that enoxacin blocks TRAP activation by preventing V-ATPase from being targeted to vesicles where cathepsins activate TRAP. Without V-ATPase, the vesicles remain neutral and cathepsins are inactive and unable to activate TRAP. To test this hypothesis, I will test whether treatment of osteoclasts with enoxacin affects the expression of TRAP activity by transcriptional or post transcriptional mechanisms. In addition, I will test whether enoxacin blocks proteolytic activation of tartrate resistant acid phosphate by cathepsens. Understanding how osteoclast work is important for understanding many non-health and health related topics, such as the treatment of osteroporosis.
