Research Description

Community Intervention for Mental Health Promotion in Rural Latinos:
Adolescents' Perspective of Family Dynamics
This project is part of a larger study that focuses on a community-based intervention
program that aims to improve mental health in rural Latino communities. My specific
study focuses on patient interviews regarding family dynamics and the different family
members' perception of their families in order to help identify areas of concern for
this specific population. The research results will be submitted for presentation at the
Southern Nursing Research Society Conference in 2015 and also at the 2015
University of Florida Scholars Symposium. My personal project aims are to describe the current evidence on how familismo impacts the
mental health of Latino families and how this cultural value varies among the
different family members. Secondly, I will also be examining the qualitative aspect of patient
interviews and analyzing as well as coding the adolescent responses using the
in vivo program according to the scales of the Family Environment Scale (FES).
