International Trade and the Bid for the FIFA World Cup
Ex ante estimates of the economic benefits awaiting the hosts of sporting mega-events are rarely confirmed by ex post evidence. Plausible ex post measures of the net economic benefits experienced by hosts are seldom large and very typically negative. Yet countries compete fiercely for the right to host events such as the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup. This research project will examine the effect of bidding for and hosting the World Cup on international trade and explore the possibility that countries vie for hosting rights to signal their intent to open trade policies.
