"The university scholars program was introduced to me during my Religion and Fieldwork class with professor Sanford. This class opened my eyes to the joy of fieldwork and inspired me to want to try it out for myself. I know there are a lot of difficulties that can arise during fieldwork, so I thought this program would provide me key experience for any future research."

Biblical Translations in an African Missionary Community
This past summer, I went to Tanzania Africa and lived in a missionary community with Youth With a Mission Morogoro. The base was located in the small village of Lukobe. My plan was to study how Biblical translations affect and influence missions. The Swahili bible was translated directly from the English Bible. Due to this, there are some words that do not directly translate causing a loss of the original meaning. I interviewed people on the base who were able to speak both English and Swahili in order to see which language they preferred to read the Bible in and why. By doing this study, I believe it will provide people with the opportunity to see some of the challenges associated with translations and how that can affect or shape a person's faith.
