"I applied for the Scholars program because it seemed like a great opportunity to get involved in research at the University of Florida. The University has so much to offer, and I wanted to make sure I get to experience all that I can. This year I hope to submit my thesis and get published!"

Is Accountability the Answer? A Look at Rick Perry and Rick Perry's College Graduation Plans
Today there have been different thoughts about how to create jobs, especially in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. The governor of Texas, Rick Perry created a plan to hold universities and professors in Texas more accountable to make sure their students graduate on time, thus pushing them faster into the work force. Since then, Governor Rick Scott of Florida has come out with a plan much like that of Governor Perry, only applicable to Florida. I plan to take a detailed look into these plans and try to determine what they really mean for the people of Texas and Florida and if they really create more STEM jobs in America. Since the Texas plan is a slightly older than the Florida plan, I will look at how Texas universities have changed since this accountability system has been in place, and look to see if that is a direct relations to the creation of STEM jobs. This research will not only give better insight on the direction Governor Scott is taking in Florida, but also give some application to America as a whole.
