"I applied to the Scholars program because I am interested in learning about the research process in the nursing profession. I hope to learn how nurses are involved in research because I would like engage in more research projects when I become a nurse. My goals for the academic year are to gain knowledge about the research process, conduct my own research and successfully present my research at the Undergraduate Research Symposium."
My research interests involve studying socially isolated and underserved communities, especially rural communities that are located near Alachua County. Specifically I am interested in learning about Latino immigrants experiences in these rural communities and what factors in their lives isolate them from the community. I would like to help them integrate better into American society.

Analyzing Social Isolation in Rural Latino Communities Through Photovoice
Social isolation is a major stressor that can substantially impact rural Latinos’ mental health. Social isolation occurs when people lack interactions, contacts, and relationships with others. When studying the mental health of Latino immigrants, social isolation is always a factor that is documented, but few studies have been performed to evaluate the factors that isolate Latinos in rural areas. Photovoice will be used in this research to identify the factors that isolate rural Latinos from their communities as well as the factors that support them in being connected in the community. Photovoice is a method where participants represent their lives by taking photographs and then discussing the pictures they took. Dr. Stacciarini is developing a photovoice research on which rural Latino participants will be asked to take pictures of factors that disconnect them from the community as well as factors that connect them to the community. A community lay-worker from the actual community (promotora) will be used to collect data with isolated rural Latinos. The purpose of this study is to understand social isolation and the emotions related to it through the use of photovoice. My own research has two specific aims: 1) describe the evidence on social isolation and how it relates to mental health in rural Latino communities and, 2) analyze the data collected from Dr. Stacciarini’s photovoice project. For the first aim a comprehensive literature review of social isolation in rural Latino communities will be performed by searching electronic databases. The second aim will be accomplished by using content analysis to describe what factors isolate rural Latinos from their communities as well as the factors that support them in being connected in the community.
