Goals and Expectations for 2007-2008 Scholars

1. Conduct research under the guidance, direction, and supervision of your faculty mentor during the summer 2007, which may be continued beyond that time frame. The scope of the research project and the expectations of your performance are decided between the mentor and the student.

2. You must be registered for at least one credit at the University of Florida during Summer A or C to be paid. This credit can be a course you are taking or research credits. You will be paid by scholarship disbursement; no paperwork needs to be completed to receive your stipend, unless you are an international student. International students must complete tax paperwork through their faculty mentor’s department.

3. You may wish to register for three credits of independent research in the summer term. Your college may even require it. Students can check with the mentor's department for the appropriate course number (e.g., 4905). Honors Undergraduate Research Credit (IDH 4917) is available to all University Scholars participants. See www.honors.ufl.edu for more information.

4. Maintain a current e-mail account in order to get updates about the University Scholars Program. If you are not receiving any e-mail about USP, please e-mail Melissa Johnson at mjohnson@honors.ufl.edu.

5. Complete the online profile and project description forms at http://www.clas.ufl.edu/jur/forms/jurprofileform.html and http://www.clas.ufl.edu/jur/forms/jurprojectform.html and have your photo taken by August 1, 2008. Many of the photos will be taken at the orientation sessions in May. Please contact Buffy Lockette at lockette@ufl.edu with any questions regarding these requirements.

6. Understand that any requirements set by your college are in addition to the university-wide requirements outlined in this document.

7. Faculty mentors will be contacted at the end of the summer to evaluate the scholar’s progress and efforts towards the completion of the University Scholars project. Scholars who do not meet minimum efforts according to their mentor’s assessments may be given a financial hold and required to return the stipend.

8. For the culmination of research, scholars are expected do the following:

9. Students not fulfilling the culminating requirement in #8 can expect a financial hold on their academic record and may be required to repay a the stipend for not completing the University Scholars Program.

The University Scholars Program, in conjunction with the Office of the Provost and the William and Grace Dial Center for Written and Oral Communication, holds a competition for the best written research articles in the University Scholars Program. Four awards, totaling $1,000, will recognize the two best qualitative and two best quantitative research articles. Awards will be announced during a ceremony following the Undergraduate Research Symposium in February.

Per the JUR submission guidelines, papers should be between 1500 and 4000 words, including references. There is no limit on the number of charts and graphs in a paper. Papers should conform to the manuscript and documentation format appropriate to the student's discipline (APA, IEEE, MLA, CBE, Chicago, etc.), including the labeling and construction of figures and tables.

Papers should follow the general format of the papers published in the Journal of Undergraduate Research at http://www.clas.ufl.edu/jur. Papers must be submitted electronically to Dr. Creed Greer by February 1. All articles submitted to the Journal of Undergraduate Research by February 1 -- including both published articles and articles under review -- will also be eligible for the awards. If you wish to have your article considered for the contest but not published, please indicate that when you submit your paper.

For information about submission to the Journal of Undergraduate Research, please contact Dr. Creed Greer.
