Research Description

The Effects of Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) on Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors

The specific aim of this project is to test whether aged garlic extract reduces inflammation by measuring the levels of CRP in the blood. In addition, the research team, led by Anne Mathews, Ph.D., R.D.N., will be examining the effects of Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) on cholesterol and triglyceride levels. To achieve these goals, we will conduct a double blind randomized clinical trial in which participants will be asked to consume three (3) capsules of 600 mg AGE or placebo with food twice a day, for a total of 3.6 grams per day, for 42 days. This dose was determined from previous studies that analyzed cardiovascular risk factors after supplementation with AGE and placebo. This study will be conducted between February 2014 and December 2014 and is a sub-analysis of a project whose primary goal is to evaluate the effect of AGE on immune function. This study has prior approval from the institutional review board of the University of Florida. We will obtain prior approval from all of the participants included in the present study. Results from the research project will help establish the beneficial effects of Aged Garlic Extract on cardiovascular disease risk factors by specifically lowering C-reactive protein, lipid and triglyceride levels in overweight adults. We hope that the findings from the present study will serve to promote continued research in the area of nutrition and the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
