I applied to the Scholars program for the great opportunity to be paired with a research professor who could mentor me and serve as a guide in my first serious research endeavor. I really hope to have a solid introduction to research in the field of economics and the methods and practices that need to be employed for success in such research. My goals for the academic year include finishing up my economics and Spanish major requirements successfully and increasing my knowledge in my chosen field the maximum possible

The Effects of the Global Recession on Youth Unemployment in Select Countries
The global recession of 2008 had broad consequences for the economies and livelihoods of citizens in the majority of the world and especially in developed countries. Just as expected, the youth in most of these countries were disproportionately affected with respect to employment and job opportunities. Even investments like education and training have proved futile in securing an acceptable standard of living for many young people. For those now graduating from institutes of higher education and even for those on the brink of entering, the prospect of limited job opportunities in the face of overwhelming mounds of debt push them to mediocre jobs for which they are overqualified. The consensus among many: the phenomenon is extremely crippling for the future of the economies in which these youths reside and for their standard of living. Thus, examining the factors which have had the strongest impact on unemployment in particular countries can have important conclusions for how they can try to combat this. I will do this analysis by compiling data about economic indicators in 10 developed countries from a number of databases. I will use regression analysis to measure the effect of these indicators on unemployment of youth in the 10 countries. I will also examine any social measures taken in these countries with a view to combatting youth unemployment and factor them into my inquiry. I hope this analysis will bring some clarity about the effect of the recession specifically on youth unemployment and the steps countries can take to protect their youth.
